Lao Coffee — The Origin Story

The quiet giant of Southeast Asian coffee

Most people think of Vietnam or Indonesia when they hear Asian coffee. But something quietly extraordinary has been growing here in Laos — at elevations of 1,200 to 1,400 metres, in mineral-rich mountain soils, with a quality-focused approach that larger neighbours have largely abandoned.

Lao Arabica is having its moment. Specialty roasters in Japan, South Korea, Europe and the US are increasingly seeking it out — not as a filler, but as a single origin. Barista Magazine named Laos an underrated gem of the specialty coffee world in 2025. James Hoffmann, in The World Atlas of Coffee, called Laos home to "some of the most interesting and unique coffee terroirs in the world."

The coffee we carry here — Den Lao, from Sayaboury and Xaisomboun — comes from exactly these highlands. Hand-picked, fully washed and natural dry processed, 100% Arabica. A bag you won't find in supermarkets.

GI Geographical Indication — in progress for Lao coffee

What is GI? Geographical Indication is the same protection system behind Champagne and Parmigiano Reggiano — it legally ties a product's name to its origin. Bolaven Plateau coffee is on Laos' priority list for the country's first GI registration, meaning the name would be protected globally, just like Colombian coffee. Lao Arabica from the northern highlands — like what's in these bags — is part of this rising wave.
